Piazza Santa Maria Novella — Florence Visit Guide

← Back to Monday’s itinerary

A relaxed first stop

The square fronts the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and is a good place to get your bearings.

What to see and do

Admire the church façade, take photos and enjoy a short seated break before heading towards the Duomo.

A little history

The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is associated with the Dominican friars, and its remarkable geometric marble façade was completed to a Renaissance design by Leon Battista Alberti. The piazza outside has long been a gathering place for residents and visitors.

Suggested visit: 15–25 minutes

Stand back to take in the whole façade, then walk towards the centre of the square for a photograph. Enjoy a few quiet minutes before heading east towards the cathedral. If the weather is poor, keep this as a quick outdoor stop.

Self-guided walking tour · about 20 minutes

Follow these suggested stops at your own pace. This is a flexible guide rather than a booked guided tour.

  1. Start at the middle of the square and face the basilica’s green-and-white marble façade.
  2. Look at the tall façade and its geometric patterns, designed in part by Leon Battista Alberti.
  3. Stroll towards the square’s historic obelisks, then turn back for a wider photograph.
  4. Leave towards Via Panzani and the Duomo, or sit and watch the square for a few minutes.

Easier option: Flat square; the basilica interior is optional.
