Baptistery of San Giovanni — Florence Visit Guide
About this place
The octagonal Baptistery opposite the Duomo is celebrated for its bronze doors and historic mosaics.
What to see and do
Study the bronze door panels and, if visiting inside, the ceiling mosaics.
Self-guided walking tour · about 30 minutes
Follow these suggested stops at your own pace. This is a flexible guide rather than a booked guided tour.
- Stand outside the octagonal building and examine the external marble geometry.
- Look at the bronze door panels and the relationship between the Baptistery, Bell Tower and Cathedral.
- If you have a valid pass, enter and explore the space and its architecture at a gentle pace.
- Return outside and move to your next cathedral-complex stop.
Easier option: Important for 3 November: the ceiling mosaics are currently obscured by restoration work. The Opera del Duomo Museum normally closes on the first Tuesday of each month.
