Florence Cathedral (Duomo) — Florence Visit Guide
The heart of Florence
Santa Maria del Fiore is famous for Brunelleschi’s enormous dome and its patterned marble façade.
What to see and do
On Monday, explore the exterior and the nearby Baptistery. Your longer cathedral visit is planned for Tuesday.
A little history
Construction of Santa Maria del Fiore began in 1296, and Filippo Brunelleschi’s ingenious dome became one of the defining achievements of Renaissance architecture. The cathedral complex also includes Giotto’s Campanile and the Baptistery of San Giovanni.
Suggested Monday visit: 25–40 minutes
Begin at the cathedral façade, walk far enough around the piazza to admire the great dome, and look towards the Baptistery’s bronze doors. Concentrate on the exterior today because your itinerary reserves Tuesday for a longer visit. There is no need to climb any stairs to appreciate the architecture.
Self-guided walking tour · about 35 minutes
Follow these suggested stops at your own pace. This is a flexible guide rather than a booked guided tour.
- Begin facing the marble façade of Santa Maria del Fiore.
- Walk to the nearby Baptistery and admire its bronze doors.
- Move along the side of the cathedral to appreciate Giotto’s Campanile and the scale of Brunelleschi’s dome.
- Return to Piazza del Duomo for a photograph and a seated café break.
Easier option: Keep this as an exterior tour on Monday. On Tuesday, cathedral entry is free, but the other monuments require a pass. Skip all high stair climbs.
