Ponte Vecchio — Florence Visit Guide
The bridge over the Arno
This famous historic bridge has jewellery shops built along both sides.
What to see and do
Walk across, enjoy the Arno river views and photograph the bridge from nearby riverbanks.
A little history
The Ponte Vecchio is one of Florence’s best-known landmarks. The present bridge dates largely from the fourteenth century, while the jewellery workshops recall centuries of trade above the River Arno. The enclosed Vasari Corridor passes above the shops.
Suggested visit: 20–35 minutes
Walk across slowly, look at the traditional shopfronts and then move to a nearby riverbank viewpoint to photograph the bridge itself. Because the November sunset is early, you may catch the bridge illuminated rather than in full daylight.
Self-guided walking tour · about 25 minutes
Follow these suggested stops at your own pace. This is a flexible guide rather than a booked guided tour.
- Approach the bridge from the north bank and notice its unusual shop-lined profile.
- Walk onto the bridge and look at the jewellery shopfronts.
- Pause at the central opening to view the Arno.
- For the best view of the bridge itself, walk a little way along the riverbank.
Easier option: Crowded cobbles are possible; use an easy pace. The riverbank vantage point is optional.
